Audience of the 2014 Victoria's Secret Ad
When Victoria's Secret created their "A Body for Every Body" ad, they were targeting young impressionable girls, or girls who want to feel sexy. Looking at this ad, these girls see all of the stick-thin models with seemingly perfect bodies. Victoria's Secret knows that impressionable girls will see this ad and want to buy the lingerie, hoping to achieve the body image displayed. These girls will focus on the caption, making them blind to the fact that all the models look the same instead of showing "every body". On the other side, the girls that view this ad and want to feel sexy will immediately be interested in buying the lingerie. Seeing the confident, sexy models posing in the clothing will entice the customers to purchase the lingerie, as they hope to achieve the same amount of sex appeal. Victoria's Secret knows exactly who their audience is when creating these advertisements for their lingerie.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you in saying the intended audience is young impressionable girls but I think you could also argue that the audience is older women spanning, but not limited, to the age of maybe 20-40. Young girls aren't the only ones who shop at this store and while Victoria's Secret may make most of their profit off of them, older women are a targeted audience as well. Older women can also desire to have this so called "sexy" look and they may also think that their body will look better in this lingerie as well. Maybe you can edit this and consider older women as well.

ReplyDeleteI like your use of putting yourself in the young girls' of the 60s shoes and how they view fashion. That is very important to determining the perception of fashion through the lens of the female mind. The females of the 60s and of this modern era are prone to wanting to have the same bodies as those female models that they see on TV in commercials and advertisements. I completely agree with you when you say that Victoria's Secret knows who they are targeting through their commercials and advertisements, they are targeting young females who they know are emotionally vulnerable and want to look as pretty as the models that are portrayed on TV and in magazines.

I really agree with your comment that the girls looking at the ad will focus on the caption, thus ignoring the fact that the models look the same instead of showing a wide range on body structures. Now, while the impressionable girls are a targeted group, girls with low self confidence or women who always tell younger girls that no one looks the same will also be attracted to this ad. I think you could look at this photo and see an even wider range of women and girls who would be interested based on the what the ad is saying, which is basically "no one looks they same" as it showcases extremely similar girls.

ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the ad I thought that Victoria's Secret was trying to show that their lingerie was versatile because it would look good on "every body." Because of that, I think that with this ad Victoria's Secret was trying to broaden their horizons and target a larger audience. However, I believe you were right in saying they were specifically targeting young girls because none of the models look older than 30. Because of that, I disagree with Casey T's comment. If they were targeting older women, older women would have been shown in the ad.
